We’ll be closed on Wednesday, November 25th, to reopen on Monday, November 30th so our wonderful volunteers might enjoy Thanksgiving with friends and family.
And we’ll be closed from the end of business on Friday, December 18th, to reopen on Monday, January 4th, 2016.
While we are closed, please refer to the Dallas Area Guide to Emergency Assistance.
We wish everyone the happiest of holidays!
Seventeen years ago we recognized that school supplies and uniforms were an out of pocket expense that strained the budgets of many in our community. As a result, in 1998 we helped 191 children in 102 families go back to school fully equipped and dressed for success.
The program grew in size, and in 2007 we began to provide two complete uniforms to each student. This year we provided required schools supplies to 2,802 students and two new uniforms sets to 2,659 students. And, by buying in bulk, we are able to obtain these items at a fraction of the retail cost parents would face otherwise.
We’re glad to help so many deserving students get off on the right foot this year.
Thanks to all the volunteers for making this program a success!
In addition to school supplies and uniforms, we’ll be offering extended vaccination hours right before the new school year starts. Our Medical Clinic will administer vaccinations from 8:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, August 18, 19 and 20. This is during the same week we distribute school uniforms.
And we’ve already begun taking applications for school uniforms and school supplies. For many households back-to-school season is a financial burden, but we’ve been making it easier for about 3,000 children each fall, saving parents over a quarter million dollars annually.
We’re taking applications each day at our Emergency Aid Center. Please note, a household may only request one form of help on the same day – either school uniforms and supplies; food, financial assistance and clothing; or medical or dental care.
We’ll distribute two new uniforms to each child during the week of August 17-21. On the first day of school, August 24, we’ll distribute supplies in our parking lot.
There are many families who only seek our assistance once each year – to get their children off to a good start in school.
If you’d like to volunteer for our distribution days, we’ll welcome you with open arms. Just email Sherrie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Through the April 15th filing deadline, we prepared 2,630 tax returns, setting a new record. We identified $ 3,833,023 in refunds, saved clients $ 717,990 in preparation fees, and, most importantly, kept them out of the “instant refund” trap – “refunds” that are actually very high interest short-term loans.
We are proud to partner with Foundation Communities and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas to provide this service. We ranked second in volume among the seven participating agencies, preparing 22.8% of all the returns processed.
As always, we owe a debt of gratitude to all the volunteers who made this accomplishment possible. Thank you!
We are thrilled to be partnering with Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry to serve even more patients in our four state-of-the-art treatment rooms. The volunteer dental professionals who were the backbone of our dental clinic efforts for over 10 years are still on the job and their volunteerism is greatly appreciated. However, the new partnership greatly adds to our capacity.
Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry is providing three dental students, a faculty supervisor, two dental assistants and a dental assistant/dental office manager who are at NDSM five hours each weekday. They are able to treat up to 30 patients per day. They are joined by four dental hygiene students from Concorde Career College.
The Hamon Charitable Foundation played a big role in making this happen, when it funded the renovation and updating of our Dental Clinic in 2012 and 2013. The improvements made NDSM an attractive partner for Baylor’s College of Dentistry’s community-based clinical training program.
We initiated adult emergency dental care in 2003, offering extractions only. We are now offering extractions, fillings, root canals, cleaning and prostheses as replacement front teeth. In the near future we anticipate treating children as well.
We are grateful to all those who have contributed to this effort and heartened that we are able to bring these services to our community.
