Why Support NDSM?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we lived in a world without poverty, ignorance or disease – a community that didn’t need the hope and help that North Dallas Shared Ministries provides? Yes it would be. Unfortunately, that’s NOT the world we live in.

There are thousands of people who live among us – next door, down the street, two blocks over – who need help to survive a crisis, ongoing support to make ends meet, or the skills to better their lives. For them, NDSM is a beacon of hope in a troubled world.

At this time of year there are many worthy causes appealing to you. So, why give to NDSM? Please let us provide some compelling reasons:

Busiest Back-to-School Yet

We helped more children get ready for school this year than ever before.

We provided two school uniforms – 2 shirts, one pair short, one pair pants – to 2,635 DISD students. The uniforms have a total retail value of $ 134, 385. We buy in bulk and spent just over a third of that.

We also provided a box with grade-specific school supplies to 2,737 children, at a cost of $ 56,000.

The demand for both supplies and uniforms has more than doubled in the last five years.

Thanks to the many volunteers who helped us and best wishes for a great school year to all our students.

We Help Record Numbers Prepare Taxes

Our tax preparation service just finished helping nearly ten times the number it did just two years ago when it began. We had 65 volunteers prepare 1,041 returns for low and moderate income families, saving them roughly $ 100,000 in preparation fees (our service costs them nothing) and identifying $ 1.9 million in refunds and credits to which they are entitled. By comparison, in 2009 we completed 115 returns.

We began offering this service because low-income families are targeted by commercial firms offering "rapid refunds" that are actually loans with extremely high interest rates - in some cases exceeding 700%.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who worked six days a week to provide this service to our community.

Record Food Drive by Scouts

When Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts do a food drive - Be Prepared!

Scouts from six Packs and nine Troops from the North District of the Boy Scouts of America's Circle Ten collected and delivered over 11,000 cans of food in February. This is among the most successful food drives in NDSM's history. Cub Scouts from Pack 713 and Boy Scouts from Troop 713 delivered the goods and the Youth Group from Northwest Bible Church sorted and shelved all the food.

We thank all involved for their hard work and determination.

Additional information and photos are on our Facebook page.
