Overview

Since 1983, congregations have recognized that involvement by their members would be the single most important key to the success of NDSM. Approximately 450 volunteers staff all NDSM positions, including that of the Executive Director. The only exception is one paid Administrative Assistant position.

NDSM is open day, evening and weekend hours to accommodate the needs of the clients and patients and to offer opportunities to a diverse group of potential volunteers. Volunteers act as interviewers, receptionists, pantry workers, teachers, job counselors, bookkeepers, office assistants, drivers, clothes closet workers and schedulers. Volunteer doctors, nurses and related health professionals staff the medical clinic. All supervisory personnel including the executive director, the medical director, clinic director, clothes closet manager, pantry manager and financial manager serve as volunteers and have education, training and/or experience to fit the positions they fill at NDSM.

Annually volunteers recorded over 50,000 hours of service—the value of which is approximately $1,000,000.

While the majority of NDSM volunteers come from member congregations, other volunteers include students from area high schools and colleges, members of the Junior League of Dallas, referrals from the Volunteer Center, school groups and individuals with no affiliation but with a desire to help.
