Each year we distribute as many as 500 winter coats to clients in need. This year’s tornadoes added to the demand for coats and school uniforms at two schools.
For students at Herbert Marcus Elementary School, we provided 69 coats. And we provided coats and school uniforms to 15 students at Maple Lawn Elementary School as a direct result of tornado damage to their homes. We sprung into action as soon as power was restored to our building.
We continue to provide coats to those who need them who have come seeking clothing, food, or financial assistance through our Emergency Aid Center.
We’ll be offering tax preparation services beginning on Saturday, January 25th.
In January, we’ll be open Tuesday-Friday 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’ll offer extended hours in February and April, adding Monday 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to the schedule and staying until 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
To receive assistance, please bring the following:
Picture ID of taxpayer and/or spouse
Social Security cards or ITIN letters for all persons listed on tax return
Earnings information (forms like W-2, 1099s, etc.)
In 2019 we prepared 3,756 returns and ITIN renewals (a 38% increase from 2018). We saved clients over $ 834,000 in tax preparation fees. Our average client received a $ 2,243 refund, with the total refunds for all our clients over $ 4.7 million.
We are thankful for the 75 volunteers who put in over 1800 hours under the guidance of Harold Menzel, and for the opportunity to partner with Foundation Communities to bring this valuable service to NDSM.
NDSM was fortunate that we suffered no structural damage to our building. But we are saddened by the losses all around us. And frustrated that we are not here for our neighbors in this time of need.
Unfortunately, we lost power because of the tornado and it was not restored until Thursday. In addition, roads to our location have been treacherous because of downed power lines and debris; many were closed completely by the police and traffic was horrific where roads were open, including Merrell Road.
On Friday, when we were assessing NDSM’s situation on site, we were also distributing two sets of new uniforms to 199 Edward H. Cary Middle School students forced to transfer to Benjamin Franklin Middle School because of heavy damage at Cary. It was very inspiring experience to be there for them.
The Medical Clinic re-opened at 7:00 am Monday, October 28th, the Dental Clinic at 8:30 am., and the Emergency Aid Center at 9:00 am.
During this time our thoughts and prayers are with all those who’ve experienced losses.
We are excited to announce the expansion of our Medical Clinic hours effective May 1. NDSM Medical Clinic is now open weekdays 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. For initial visits, we will continue to see patients on a first-come, first-serve basis. Patients must be uninsured and live within our service area.
The NDSM Medical Clinic is a collaborative effort between UT Southwestern Medical Center and NDSM.
